Since its beginning on April 11, 1962, the Glenwood Springs Art Guild has grown not only in membership, but more importantly, in helpful and warm artistic communications. The purpose of the art guild is to stimulate creative art efforts and knowledge. General meetings are on every second Tuesday of the month at 7 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1630 Grand Ave, in Glenwood Springs, and provide members with an educational program, demonstration or critique session. The guild is always ready to welcome artists, or just art lovers as new members.
Many GSAG members show at several Western Slope exhibits as a group throughout the spring and summer months and sponsor continuous exhibits at several area businesses in Glenwood Springs. In addition, each spring the guild members are invited to display their work at the Annual GSAG Spring Exhibit at the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts.
Every year the Glenwood Springs Art Guild not only awards a $2,000 Nancy Piper Memorial Scholarship to a worthy area high school senior planning to major in art at a college, university, or reccognized art school, and two Jan Worden Memorial Grants in the amounts of $1000 and $750 to to two seniors from area high schools who wish to study art in higher education, but they also present a $150 grant to all art departments of the area schools from Basalt to Parachute for much needed art supplies. In addition, each year the GSAG furnishes art books or videos to all of the area public libraries from Basalt to Parachute and supports art related activities at Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home, the Valley View Hospital Youth Recovery Services, the Colorado West Juvenile Recovery Center, Mountain Valley Developmental Services in Glenwood Springs, Advocate Safehouse Project, the Western Colorado Watercolor Society, the Garfield County Fair, Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts, CMC Mini-College, Cross Roads Academy and 30 area schools from Basalt to Parachute. In addition, each year at the Fall Art Festival, the guild purchases a piece of fine art from the Bargain Bin and donates it to a service family through Operation Vacation Project and also a piece from the main gallery to add to the guild’s collection on public display at Valley View Hospital, the Glenwood Springs Library and the Garfield County Annex.
The Annual Fall Art Festival is our main event for the year. This exhibition has developed into one of the largest and most popular nonjuried art shows in Colorado. The Fall Art Festival offers an excellent opportunity for amateur, advanced and professional artists, both GSAG members and non-members, to exhibit and sell their work. This event is the only fund raiser for the year, making it possible for the Glenwood Springs Art Guild to fulfill its mission statement to support the visual arts in the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond. See the Fall Art Festival information page for details.
